The Malawi Interfaith AIDS Association (MIAA), initially called the Interfaith HIV and AIDS Secretariat, was established towards the end of 2003 with support from the Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) as an interfaith service agency to facilitate a united commitment of Faith Communities in the struggle against HIV AND AIDS. This was out of the realization that the faith communities have strengths, credibility, and are grounded in communities offering them the opportunity to make a real difference in combating HIV and AIDS. The next step, after having established MIAA as an organization, was to prepare a Strategic Plan which could spell out the strategic direction and the road map for the smooth implementation of its activities.

MIAA is an umbrella of interfaith institutions and exists to coordinate a faith-based response to health and HIV through a gender sensitive and rights-based approach
